Learn Astrology / Vimshottari Dasha
Your birth chart shows what karma may ripen. Vimshottari answers when.
Birth chart
Wealth, marriage, career abroad, spiritual growth — the promise sits in houses, yogas, and graha strength.
Vimshottari dasha
Planetary periods turn that promise on — like seasons when certain themes dominate life.
Vimshottari means 120. Nine grahas share one full cycle in a fixed order. The sequence never changes — only your starting point differs.
Total cycle: 7 + 20 + 6 + 10 + 7 + 18 + 16 + 19 + 17 = 120 years, then it repeats.
At birth, the Moon sits in one of 27 nakshatras. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet — that ruler's Mahadasha is what you are born into (or what is already running). The Moon is used because it governs mind, daily experience, and how karma is felt in life — not only events on paper.
| Moon in… | Ruler | You start in… |
|---|---|---|
| Ashwini | Ketu | Ketu Mahadasha |
| Rohini | Moon | Moon Mahadasha |
| Vishakha | Jupiter | Jupiter Mahadasha |
After the starting Mahadasha ends, planets follow the fixed order: Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury → (repeat).
Each nakshatra spans 13°20′ (800 arc minutes). The Moon's exact position inside that span tells how much of the first Mahadasha has already passed before you were born.
Example: Moon in Rohini (ruled by Moon, 10-year dasha)
Software does the math from birth time; the idea is simply: later Moon in the nakshatra = less time left in the opening period.
Mahadasha (Major period · Several years)
Sets the broad life chapter — career push, relationship focus, spiritual turn, etc.
Antardasha (Bhukti) (Sub-period · Months to a few years)
Colours the Mahadasha. Venus–Jupiter may favour marriage; Venus–Saturn may bring duty or distance in love.
Pratyantar (Sub-sub-period · Finer slices)
Used for closer event timing. Experts may go deeper (Sookshma, Prana) for day-level work.
A dasha does not invent results that are absent in the chart. It activates what is already there — good or difficult. Two people in Saturn Mahadasha may feel discipline and achievement, or burden and isolation, depending on Saturn in their horoscope.
Astrologers usually check:
Strong Jupiter example
Jupiter owns 2nd & 11th, sits in 10th, unafflicted → dasha may bring career rise, income, recognition. Same planet weak or hit by Saturn/Rahu → legal tangles, overconfidence, or moral stress instead.
Watch activation of the 7th house, Venus, Jupiter, 2nd and 11th. Example: Venus Mahadasha + Moon Antardasha — if Venus rules or links to 7th, Moon ties to 2nd/11th, and transits agree — marriage may ripen in that window. The dasha shows when the promise is ready, not the promise itself.
Career shifts often involve 10th, 6th, 2nd, 11th, Saturn, Sun, Mercury, or yogakarakas. A strong 10th lord's Mahadasha may bring promotion, authority, new role, or visibility. Financial independence often needs several money houses activated together.
“Dashas show what karma is ripe; transits show when it manifests.”
Transits alone are secondary. A great transit during a weak dasha may pass quietly; a modest transit during a strong dasha can still change life. Skilled prediction combines natal promise + dasha + transit trigger.
Each period shifts priorities, emotions, relationships, and ambitions — not only what happens, but how you experience it.
Vimshottari has stayed in daily use for centuries because it gives structure to life chapters — timing, psychology, and karma in one system.
