Why two charts appear
If you have started learning Vedic astrology, you have probably opened a horoscope and seen two different charts: the Rasi Chart (D1) and the Bhav Chalit Chart.
Then comes the confusion: Jupiter looks like it is in the 10th house in Rasi, but in the 9th in Bhav Chalit. Which one is correct?
Rasi chart tells you where the planets are by zodiac sign. Bhav Chalit tells you where the planets are actually operating by house.
What is a Rasi Chart?
The D1 foundation of Vedic astrology
The Rasi chart shows the positions of the planets in the 12 zodiac signs at birth. Each sign occupies exactly 30°, so the full zodiac is 360°.
When someone says “My Jupiter is in Taurus” (for example Jupiter at 18° Taurus), they are talking about the Rasi position. The sign determines the environment in which the planet operates.
The Rasi chart is useful for:
Houses Are Not Always the Same as Signs
The Ascendant is a degree — not merely a sign
Many beginners assume one sign equals one house. In a simple sign-based approach that works — but actual house cusps can differ because the Ascendant is a specific degree, not just a sign.
For example, Ascendant at 25° Gemini is not simply “Gemini.” That degree becomes the starting reference for calculating houses. Boundaries can fall at different degrees within the signs — and that is where Bhav Chalit enters.
What Is a Bhav Chalit Chart?

The Bhav Chalit chart is a house-oriented chart. It shows which house a planet actually falls into, based on house cusps and boundaries.
A planet can remain in the same zodiac sign but move from one house to another in Bhav Chalit. Jupiter at 29° Cancer is always in Cancer in Rasi — but depending on Ascendant degree and cusps, it may fall into a different house.
Rasi position ≠ necessarily Bhav Chalit house position.

The planet has not jumped around the zodiac. Only the house classification has changed. This matters most for planets near 0° or 29° of a sign, or near house cusps.
The Most Important Rule
Do not change the Rasi position of a planet just because Bhav Chalit puts it in another house.
If Jupiter is at 18° Taurus, Jupiter is still in Taurus. Bhav Chalit does not move Jupiter to another sign — it only changes the house in which Jupiter is considered to operate.
Rasi = identity
What the planet is like and the sign environment it operates in (e.g. Mars exalted in Capricorn stays relevant even if bhava shifts).
Bhav = activity
Which area of life the planet is influencing most directly.
So Which Chart Should You Use?
Use both — but not for the same purpose
Use Rasi primarily for

Yogas and House Lords
Do not automatically cancel a Rasi-based yoga simply because Bhav Chalit shifts a planet. Examine Rasi placement, dignity, ownership, bhava placement, aspects, nakshatra, dasha, and relevant divisional charts together.
House lordship stays Rasi-based
For Gemini Ascendant, Pisces is the 10th sign — Jupiter remains the 10th lord. That does not change because Bhav Chalit places some planet differently. Rasi determines sign-based lordship; Bhav Chalit shows where the planet operates by bhava.
Career, Marriage & Other Houses
A simple three-step habit
Career (10th)
Rasi: 10th sign, 10th lord, occupants, aspects, strength
Bhav: Which planets actually fall into the 10th bhava?
Marriage (7th)
Rasi: 7th sign, 7th lord, Venus, Jupiter, aspects, strength
Bhav: Which planets fall within the 7th bhava — especially near 6th/7th boundaries?
Children (5th) & property (4th)
Rasi: Framework: lords, Jupiter, Venus, Mars as relevant
Bhav: Extra house-level detail for planets near boundaries
Then check dasha: are the relevant planets currently active? Astrology is about connections — not isolated placements.
A Note for KP Astrology
In KP astrology, cusps, nakshatras, star lords, and sub-lords are central. Exact cusp position is critical — do not rely on a traditional sign-house chart and ignore cusps.

The Rasi chart and Bhav Chalit chart are not competitors — they are complementary tools.
